intermediate shaft.(upper half of the steering shaft) i have the same problem just havent gotten around to fixing it yet. thinking of getting the heavy duty shaft, but is it really worth the $280? i mean, do the needle bearings make that much of a difference? the stock replacement is only, like $70. and i know while im at it, i should replace the lower column bearing as well since itll be all apart anyways. something you should also look into.

Just remove the lower bolt on the ISS and 'exercise the steeering shaft 1/2 dozen times-it moves the grease around- reattach the bolt and you will be all set. It will feel good as new. I did that to mine about 6 months ago. Cheaper than buying a new ISS ;)

There is a thread with pics on here somewhere.

Here is one thread-its pretty good: http://www.tahoeyukonforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1528&highlight=steering+shaft

i did that and still have some play. a lot less than before. so it may fix your issue, however it did not fix mine. so i may just replace the shaft. and the lower bushing as well. but at the same time my steering box may have play in it. i havent ruled it out. truck had a frame repair from previous and i think they fixed what "looked broke" instead of replacing what should have been replaced to be safe. and yeah this forum has been a godsend of useful and helpful knowledge and people.

How about the steering gearbox?

I also have play in my Escalade and two dealerships couldn't find anything wrong. I did have the ISS replaced which did very little to lessen the play.

It's been awhille since I've owned a vehicle without rack and pinion steering but I do remember that those steering boxes did over time loosen up and required adjustment or on occasion needed replacing.

Has the gearbox been a common problem on our large, heavy SUVs?
