I found this one on rock auto but it's a different part number than what I thought it was.http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=4984563&cc=1166453

But the part number that i have is ACDelco 36-0517567. Are these parts interchangeable? If anyone knows where I could find the correct steering gear for a 97 yukon I would be forever in your debt. I even contacted some sellers on eBay and they said theirs are no longer for sale.

It's good to check the ACDelco parts catalog

http://parts-catalog.acdelco.com/catalog/catalog_search.php

Looks like you have the standard gear box and the one Rockauto sells is the upgraded professional unit which should work fine for you. Probably has some beefier parts. I believe I went through the same deal on my 96'. I purchased the unt from Rockauto as well and it's working great.

Thank you for the reply I was starting to lose hope. I took your advice but when I search by my vehicle the one on rock auto's site doesn't come up, and when I search by that part number no vehicles come up. I sent an email to rock auto hopefully they can confirm that one is the one I need. Did you install that exact part number on your truck? Was it any stiffer or anything since you said it was a heavier duty steering gear than stock? Thanks for your help, I have a new pitman arm, idler arm, idler arm bracket and center link just sitting in a box that I want to install with the steering gear, but I can't seem to find that last part.

I always keep seeing people recommend a company called Redhead for steering boxes. Supposedly the best thing since sliced bread. Try googling that before you buy.

Thanks for your help, I actually did a job just like yours on my yukon about a year ago and replaced everything except the steering parts. I just ordered up the steering gear from rock auto. I gotta say they are quick to answer emails I sent one last night and had a reply by 6:30 this morning. They said its the right one and will fit, and that the part number I had for the other one was discontinued. I would think if it fits my year it would at least fit all 96-99's. Just curious what do you mean by pretty easy? like it takes no effort to turn the wheel? does your truck feel more nimble, precise or tightened up?

Turning the wheel feels pretty effortless even at slow speeds. I had quite a bit of play previously but it was probably from all the other components. In all actuality I probably didn't need to replace the steering box. I guess I thought it would tighten things up a bit more but I still feel like there is a little play. Could just be that it's an old system and that's how they were. I want to tighten the settings a little but i was giving myself to some time to get used to it so I could feel the difference. Problem is my other car is a Porsche Cayman and there's really no comparing the two.

Thanks for the info, I agree there is only so much we can do with the steering design on these trucks. Comparing to a Porsche I'm sure it's like a driving a boat. Now I can finally finish up all the steering and suspension. I would recommend sway bars to help though, ever since I put a beefy front one on it dramatically reduced body roll, the truck feels like it stays flat in turns, then I put a rear one on last week and it feels even better, less body roll at high speeds, Nice and smooth taking freeway ramps at 50 mph. I'm probably like you I don't really need the steering gear, but I'm trying to tighten up the steering, and make the truck reliable and long lasting. Probably going to get a rag joint kit too to help. Since you got a 96 I hear good things about jeep steering shafts and also borgeson makes a replacement steering shaft for your truck as well.
