Looking for guidance on purchase

Be prepared, find some comparables in the area and bring them in(or just mention them), I did the same for my 07. They came down a bit.

I had my mechanic look at the truck today. One real find with a few possible others.

1. Right front axel seal leaking. States this represents a several hundred dollar fix as the entire front needs to drop down. He stressed this probably didn’t need fixed imminently.

2. He felt he might hear a slight blend door “ticking noise” coming from dash.

3. Rear tie rod end link issues but again nothing mission critical.

4. The motor itself had been pressure washed and he could tell there was a new water pump. However, he did note there was some pretty intense oil/crud buildup on a lower part of the engine that wasn’t easily reached. He had several hypothesis on how this could have happened with perhaps a blown water pump spraying the area. Nonetheless the oil and fluids looked fine so just an interesting tidbit.

The interior was fairly clean. I could tell it was a former smokers car as there were a few burn holes but the smell was not present. The headliner was starting to peal by the driver and passenger doors. Mostly just 14 year old vehicle stuff.

The truck was listed at 9950. I offered him 7500 citing the axel seal. He said he couldn’t do less than 9000 I offered 8000 before leaving.

Thanks everyone for your input. I am going to continue the search. I found a local 2007 expedition that I am going to check out next but still really want a Tahoe.

TLDR: minor problems offered 8K he wouldn’t accept it. Didn't buy the truck.

Nice call on having a pro eyeball ur potential choices. Good job walking away from it. A recently power washed motor or bay is a call to caution.

Headliner repairs immediately show as repairs if not done by a pro. HVAC issues are costly and have zero effect on value or resale.

You did right by walking away. Take your time and don't rush. Many of us searched for months to find the right truck and traveled far and wide to bring them home. Ohh, and don't even think about a Ford again! I thought you wanted something reliable? hehehe

P.S. - Have the mechanic hook up his scan tool and check the whole system for codes and what not next time.

ive had a few salesmen all happy looking till i walked on them, trucks all looked good in pics, but in person most were beat up inside and out, and both had brown to black tranny fluid, deal killer right there. another salesman walks by and says out loud, well that didnt take long!!! meaning hes got a fish on the hook already. i looked him in the eye and said dont be looking to happy yet pal.....pulled the trans dip stick and said well this is over, have a nice day....

the 05 i ended up getting was listed for 8600 ish iirc, with leather, loaded really with 3 rd row, 121,000 on it, red trans fluid, worked that guy down to 6500. my own inspections showed it needed some work. showed him some bad stuff and the deal went through.

i spent almost a 6 months just looking around. then when i was ready to buy, still took a few more months to find one. there are a lot out there, its just how old and how many miles are you willing to deal with. and over all condition.

and id steer clear of them fords, i have a friend with one. its a pile.

Hello everyone!

I recently had my first child and with the kid, two medium-large dogs and my wife I am looking to buy a bigger vehicle. I don't want car payments so not looking to buy a new $40,000+ truck.

I have found a few local Tahoe's for sale but this one seems the cleanest to my admittedly untrained eye. It is somewhat local and I did take a look at it in person today. We do have a family friend that is a reputable mechanic that lives locally and the dealer has stated he wouldn't mind me taking it to him for a pre-purchase inspection.

I couple of things that stick out to me. The seller is proud to call out the fact it was an Arizona car. This is desirable to us here in the rust belt. However, you can see on the car fax linked on the posting that it has been in PA for the past ~5 years. The truck seems almost TOO clean. The fender liners are spooky clean. The tires are brand new but are off-brand (fuzion).

Assuming my mechanic gives this a fairly clean bill of health is this something I should pull the trigger on?

If you keep looking you'll find the right Tahoe for you, the common issues on tahoes/yukons and Ecsalates with over 100k are the listed below. I now you are problably thinking that's a shit load of items but it really is not. With good maintanance i've heard some of these SUV's run for up to 350,000 miles with no issues. Keep in mind vehicles with over 100k require some mechanical work. Al

Leaking valve cover gaskets easy fix.
Rear main seal gasket (appx $800 to $1000 to fix, pain in the ass to fix as you have to drop the transmision.
Oil pan gasket leak, easy to fix if its 2wd (4wd a little more challenging)
Valley cover gasket (challenging but can be a DIY)
Leaky brake hydroboster, easy fix. remove and replace wore out oring.
On the top end suvs the air ride suspension usually goes out.

Good job not letting a $200 detail sell you on $2-$3K worth of problems.
