I bought my 2005 Z71 about a year ago with 80k miles.. It now has 95 and is going strong. One on going issue I have is a "clanging" sound when i go over bumps or uneven road surfaces. It is coming from under the dash and is fairly solid sound.. i.e., it sounds like two fairly solid pieces of metal hitting each other. It cannot be felt in the steering, usually happens when I'm going straight, and putting pressure on the steering wheel doesn't seem to affect it. The steering is otherwise tight with no signs of wear. I've ruled out a loose brake or gas pedal. I've pulled off the panels around the dash and the only possible culprit I can find is the steering linkage. When I press on the shaft going up into the steering column (through the white plastic bearing) it makes a similar sound. However, the U joint has no play and the cross bolt pictured is tight. The sound seems to be between the small shaft on the left and the larger one on the right.
How in the hell do I address this? Is the plastic piece worn out? I've never worked on steering columns and they seem like a PITA to disassemble.
Is this worth tearing into or should I have someone do it? The sound has happened much more frequently in the time I've had the truck, so I do believe it will continue to get worse.
