Loud Clank the hell???

Well i test drove that 96 yukon on 23's, its has 130k on her and it shifted fine but when i put it in reverse i heard a loud clank... i mean it wasent super loud but aloud enough that it caught my attention.... im thinking u joints? bc its only when shifting down into reverse, or is it the tranny??

my 01 clanks into reverse like that sometimes, not sure what it is. it's not real loud, but enough to notice like you said.

If I remember right, you had said this 96 was 4WD. If so, the clank is very common, it is the result of the slight play designed into all the parts of the drivetrain. As long as the clang isnt coming from the diff housing you should be okay. The 23's could also started wreaking havoc on the gears.

Also, bw aware that 23" tires are not the easiest to come by. I manage a tire shop and tire rack is about the only place I can get 23" tires from and your choices are not very broad.

Mine used to clank when I shifted into drive or reverse. turned out to be the u-joints. I replaced both on the rear and it clanks no more. Check it for play in the drive shaft.

yeaa thanks guys its what i was thinking an heard it was common... at first i thought it was the tranny but my good ol granpa reminded me it was prob the u joints lol... not a big deal how much they go for??

O'Reilly's has a press you can rent, that has an uber c-clamp you put a 1/2" wrench on, and crank on. I just did one this last weekend, took some video of what a bad one looks like. I'll post it when I download it off my phone.

if its u-joints get a torch and heat the area up carefully and evenly ( with the shaft off of course). and watch all the plastic injection ooze out. it will make the job easier.
