it seems the lower ball joint are a pita with out the right tools am I not better off buying the upper and lower control arms and be done with it,
much easier job for a diy guy then pressing in and out ball joints , or am I missing something here

well its easier to do the entire control arm, its usually more expensive. What i like about doing just the ball joint is you can choose an aftermarket like moog that has a grazeable fitting where the oem dosent.

I have a 2007 ls 4.8 I guess hold a magnet up to the lca to see if steel or aluminum,

I just rebuilt the entire front end on my '07 Avalanche and bought all new AC Delco parts online, including the upper and lower control arms. Going entirely new was significantly cheaper than buying all of the bushings and balljoints and paying labor to have them pressed in/out. I got the LCAs for $72 each shipped, but was sad to learn they are steel not aluminum like the originals. The uppers were $78/82 shipped.
