is this pretty common on the plastic tanks?

fairly expensive to replace.

Be especially bad in a Tahoe/Yukon with the huge gas tank. And probably have it filled up to get a good start in the morning. Ouch. But those plastic tanks are fairly thick so I'd think a screw or bolt with an 0-ring under the head would get it home.

Waiting for the super cool dumba.ss person to do this while smoking a cigarette or happen to do to a vehicle with a metal/metallic gas tank and blow themselves up including the vehicle. Then vehicle owner gets handed a fat check from their insurance because the current comps on their year vehicle are stupid high due to the current crazy used vehicle market.

And bonus for everyone else; One less lowlife in the world.

Years ago I had an old Ramcharger that I was welding the rear tailgate jamb to reinforce it where it met the quarter panel using an old stick welder. When I flipped my mask up I saw that eerie orange fire flame glow under the back of the truck reflecting off the floor. Apparently it had a rear mounted plastic fuel tank which my dumb young ass was unaware of.

The heat from welding traveled down the sheet metal and melted the plastic/caught the tank on fire. When I looked under the bumper the top corner of the tank had a 6" hole in it burning and melting into the tank. I thought that was going to be the last thing I saw and was going to die.

Of course I had no fire extinguisher near by and had to run around to find one. I was afraid to go back anywhere near the truck and could not believe it still didn't explode. I ran back with the extinguisher and put it out, by then the hole was about 12" in diameter. Still don't know how it didn't explode and I am still here to tell the story. It had about half a tank of fuel in it.

It's best if they do "leave the building" since otherwise the truck owner would get sued. For something or other.

I could see the perp's fiancee on TV saying he was just out of rehab, turning his life around, going to be a good dad to their three kids.
