You can't update a deceased dinosaur, but General Motors tries anyway.

I own a Garmin nüvi 3597LMTHD, and that thing is a top-notch unit.

Second that motion. My 2010 GM nav was/is so good at getting me lost I don't even use it anymore. Garmin is the only way to go. Lots of them have free updates for life.

This is beside the idiocy of having the screen at the bottom of the stack so you have to take your eyes off the road, lean, squint, repeat. Pure genius.

I noticed in the new ones they moved the screen back up to the top.

I just got my 2010 Tahoe a few months ago, am really disappointed in the NAV, had hoped to get rid of my dash top GPS. The inability to enter location while moving makes it virtually useless (is there a way to defeat that feature?). It also seems slow to me. Not impressed, I still use my Garmin.

Oh no! I am sorry that you are disappointed with your vehicle's navigation system. Please private message if I can be of any assistance.

I'd say it's because it's 3 years old, but my gps is older than that. I've tried to keep an open mind about it, realize it's not familiar to me yet, so I keep using it here and there. But, hasn't seemed nearly as functional as a dashtop gps to me.

Jennifer, have you used one and compared it to a dash top gps? How have you found it?

Thanks,
David

You are new to this forum. There have been many rants on here about what a lousy performer the GM nav unit is. The only people who defend them are the ones that have never tried something else... like a Garmin.

Perfect example: GM nav got me lost in Calgary, route looked like an etch-a-sketch. So I started the Garmin and it got me out of there. They were both working and at one point I got these instructions.

Garmin: "in one quarter mile take Deerford off ramp south then bear left to highway 2 south."

GM nav: "in one quarter mile turn right then turn left."

Unacceptable.

You're right Mike, and I've read some of the comments. What I don't understand is why GM would just roll it out year after year, and not fix it. While the access lag of the DVD based system is a problem, I would think one of the advantages is that they could upgrade the system with a new DVD. Imagine if we could all upgrade to a working, functional NAV system just by ordering a DVD from GM, would make for a lot of happy customers.

I don't know how the technology really works, just surprised that someone at GM would think this was an acceptable system in $60,000 vehicles.

If they spent the tens of millions to fix it ... it would still not be equal to Garmin. Why not just license Garmin and get out of the nav business entirely?

Answer... cost/benefit ...like everything they do. I read a couple of books about the development of the Corvette. They don't think that it's just $50 per car to improve this or that. Their thought process is always that it is $50 per car times a million cars and that is $50 million right off the bottom line.... and there goes our bonuses! As an example, look how long the interior of the Vette has been third rate.

I'm afraid that $100 for an update to bring my 07 tahoe's navi up to the latest version won't be worth the cost. I'd love to know what others that are using the most current version think of it. Again, I'm referring to the latest version for the 07 models.
