Motor Oil Brand vs Consumption?

Specs appear to be similar to the AC Delco Dexos 1 in your chart.
Can find it on line. Never been to a Phillips 66 station but I imagine they sell their oils.

Found some on Amazom but my eyes are shot for today. SDS sheet was not very specific, will check it out again later.

Unfortunately looking closer at vendors' listings for that oil some of the bottles have the Dexos seal and others don't, so it would be a crap shoot buying it without having it in hand to check.

I know the numbers don't seem far off and I am far from a trained expert but my motor does not rattle like it used to with the ACDelco oil versus the plain Mobil One. We were going to try Quaker State next. Too bad Shell discontinued Gas Truck.

More importantly, how does your engine perform on it Tom? Oil consumption and cold start noise?

What is your take on test viscosity variations in the specs as they might relate to potential lifter issues?
Is higher or lower viscosity (test specs) better with regard to the potential issue?
Also, is higher or lower test viscosity better for startup noise?

0W-?? is better than 5W-?? for startup, especially for colder cold starts. Maybe irrelevant for the summer though.

No, not the general rated viscosity.
I am referring to the test viscosities at 40 C and 100 C listed in the specs partially listed by swathdiver on page 1 of the thread.

I've used Valvoline 5W30 conventional oil in all my vehicles for years until the 2013 Tahoe and 2017 Yukon purchases, then started using Quakerstate Full Synthetic in the Tahoe and I'm on my first oil change in the Yukon right now with Mobile 1 Full Synthetic.

I went to Walmart last weekend to get oil for the kids 99 & 00 Camry's and could not find a single jug of Conventional Oil - everything was a blend or full synthetic.

I was at Costco this week and couldn't find any oil - where is it normally stocked?

40C & 100C have nothing to do with startup noise - unless starting up @ 40C or 100C.

I have used M1 but it allows a noisy first start engine and for a half mile or so. I can't say I'd go back to it after using other brands that don't do that.

40C & 100C have nothing to do with startup noise - unless starting up @ 40C or 100C.

Just using the numbers for relative comparison between oils regardless of the temperature. Some oils with those numbers lower than others do appear thin when poured.

Higher is better when it comes to ASTMs D445, D2270, D4683 and D4741.
