I just bought a magnaflow muffler model 12589 for my 07 tahoe. It is 22" long and the stock muffler is 28" long.

If I cut off the old muffler and install the new one, will it matter if I don't put the end of the pipe and the tip back on?

Will it hurt the shocks or axel and will it be loud?

It will not be all that loud and will do nothing to the shocks or axle. When I put my 12589 on I found it to be almost a direct replacement but had the muffler shop weld it up for me (in the interest of time and getting it installed sooner) and it was well worth it.

The way the highlighted text above is worded it seems as though you are reffering to the resonator and not the actual muffler which is located roughly under the passengers seat. I could be wrong though. You can just put a turn down right at the muffler exit and leave the rest of the tailpipe and tip off.

Do YOU mean "resonator" here? I can't imagine anyone would want the exhaust existing directly under the truck, especially so far forward (where you'd have to smell it sitting at a light). Do you mean that he can put a turn down after the resonator?

Yes, I was reffering to leaving off the resonator and tip and just dumping the exhaust out the bottom or to the side (in front of the rear passenger tire). I think I have changed my mind though and will leave the resonator and stock tip on. I will probably just buy some nicer tips to put on.

After what kmeloney said, I don't want to smell exhaust and that just makes sense that I would if I left it below the passenger door. Thanks for the help everyone and I will take pics and post up tonight!

I have a Magna flow muffler, removed the resonator, and dumped near the rear bumper. The shop ensured there was enough slope that the flow exited away from the vehicle (not straight down). I did this to have clearance while off-road. No exhaust smell inside while idling.

Donkey, IMO remove the resonator because it will sound better and finish after the rear axle with SLP (or whichever brand) resonator delete, shop supplied tip, or turn-down.

Well, so much for posting pics tonight, the stock pipe that was supposed to be 3" is not. I bought a short tube of 3" pipe to fill the gap and I can't even get the pipe clamps to budge the pipe at all. I'm gonna drop it off tonight and have a place weld it on for me.

Oh well, it was fun cutting it off and at least giving it a try. You win some you lose some. Thanks everyone for all your help and I will at least post pics of what I done and the finished product for everyone to see.

LOL how much have you spent so far? I'm pretty sure by now you could've had it welded professionally done by a local muffler shop. :Handshake:
