Just wanting to get everyone's experiences with different brands on there 5.3 I'm looking for low drone in the back but a good sound when it accelerates.. but I don't want to lose power like I have heard from flowmaster. Imco and maybe magna flow are what I'm looking at. I'm a prison guard so I'm broke so any help would be great. I'll be getting an air raid jr or spectre intake in the future aswell Thanks guys

The Magnaflow 12589 seems to be the most popular aftermarket hi-flow muffler recommended here.

Alright thanks. I'll look into it. Hoping to find something similar to the super 50 from flowmaster. Tone without the drone lol

why would you lose power from a flowmaster muffller thats assuming you dont get a more restrictive flowmaster muffler then your stock muffler
The trick is to have a pipe that that is as narrow as possible while having as close to zero backpressure as possible at the RPM range you want your power band to be located at.

to wide you lose flow velocity to narrow you create backpressure

with cats and on stock headers and stock motor a muffler doesnt do much more then sound cool

Yea I kno. I have just heard you lose low end torque a bit from flowmaster on the 5.3 super 40 is cheap .. and 50 is the sound I'm after. But imco is pretty much a flowmaster knock off so I'm leaning towards that or a 40. My problem is I have no first hand of any of these. Just YouTube or people on the boards. I don't expect power. I just don't want to lose any either

If you like the sound of a 50 series flowmaster just get one. The idea that you lose power with flowmaster is the product of people who don`t know their ass from their elbow.

But flow through design mufflers like magnaflow will make slightly more horsepower over flowmaster but it`s very little 1-5 horse depending on the application.

I have a custom catback on my yukon with 3 inch pipe from the cat to the muffler and 2-1/2 inch tails with 4 inch tips and a 50 series. It`s loud but drone is almost non existant.

That sounds like a nice setup. How did it feel after? I guess I'm used to the torque of a supercharged car and had a camaro prior to that I'm afraid to lose some low end grunt even minor . And if I can add some response with an intake. Then I would be happy... for a bit anyways dumb I know

HP gains or losses depend on the application and setup. On a stock 5.3 in a big ass SUV I probably wouldn't worry about it, however crapmaster has been proven to rob horsepower across all the F-Body forums. I've never been into Mustangs, so I don't know if they have run tests before, but I'm sure someone has strapped a car on the dyno with a test pipe and swapped out mufflers before.
