Well, I looked for a Tahoe for a while and ended up finding a 2000 5.3 w/ G80 and GT4 gears, which is what I wanted. It has 160k on it and I paid 5k, so I think I did ok. Now I'm trying to sort out some issues. On the way home from the dealership, I was hearing blinker relay noises, but the blinkers weren't on or flashing. If I fully depress the hazard light switch, the relay stops clicking. Started it up the other day and the the high beam indicator was on..... From what I can tell, this is probably a multifunction switch issue.

Next issue is that the fuel gauge takes forever to register, if it's working at all. Put the truck in neutral, and it springs up to the correct level(or so I hope). From what I've been able to find on here, it's either carbon on the float in the tank or a gauge cluster issue.

Biggest problem I've found so far is that the transfer case seems to be stuck in 4wd. I was noticing some hoping with tight turns, so I had someone slowly move the truck, as I watched the front driveshaft, and sure enough it was spinning, along with the front axles(this is in 2wd). The hubs are working, as you can definitely tell the difference when you shift to 4wd high(hear them engauging and disengauging) and can certainly feel the difference. Now I know it's not uncommon to have some rotation in the front driveline, while in 2wd, but I tried to spin the front shaft with the truck in park and no dice, put in in neutral and there she spins. Now, this encoder motor I am reading about, is this the mechanism that actually shifts the transfer case? Is there a mechanical way to put the case in 2wd? Oh and it seems to be working fine in 4wd hi and 4wd low. No noises or anything like that. I need to get this thing over to my buddy's house, get it on the lift and see if the front driveshaft is actually under power in 2wd.

Any suggestions/opinions on any of the above would be appreciated!

Thanks,
Dan

I think this needs to be in the 2000-2006 section.

Curious about the blinker noise, as mine does this on occasion as well.

For the gas gauge, mine did that for about 3 months and then the fuel pump went **** up. The pump, float assembly and pickup is all part of the fuel pump assembly and they're not cheap.

Not sure how I got this in the wrong forum, mods please move. Sorry.

So the transfer case doesn't free wheel the front when in 2wd? That seems like a questionable design!

its something with the autotrac and the first few years..i put my headers on and my front weight on the driveshaft hit the headers..i dealt with it for a few weeks until i finally just knocked the weight off lol..so ya it always spins..i guess the newer ones dont spin but thats just what ive heard...try pulling the shaft and see if it still drives weird.its only a 10 minute job..

Thanks for the reply Nick. One of my best friends has a shop with a lift. I'm going to bring it over there in the next couple days and check the whole truck over really good, change fluids in the diffs and T-case and all that. My thinking is that, on the lift, I should be able to put it in drive and have someone barely let the wheels spin and stop the front driveshaft by hand, if it's just an inertia in the transfer case issue like you are stating. Or are you saying that the shaft on the early NVG 246 actually is under full power? If so, I think I might want to replace it with a newer model, that doesn't. Seems like a lot of energy and efficiency would be lost due to spinning the driveshaft, diff, and axles, when there is no power being required. Not to mention wear and tear on on all the related parts...

Good looking truck you have there, btw!

front driveshaft will always spin when in 2wd. and from my understanding when the truck is in 2wd there is no power being directed to the front the shaft just spins freely as the wheels move. but i might be wrong with the older years?
