As some of you might remember, I was debating on purchasing a new 2011 Tahoe being that GM was overing 0% financing. Long story short, I got a great deal on the truck, as well as my trade in.

2 weeks later I was having issues with something and decided I would schedule a service appointment at a local dealer. Keep in mind, my only experience with dealers has been at Lexus, where I've been having cars serviced for the last 10 years. I show up at the Chevy dealer today, and I am told that I will have to wait 90 minutes or 2 hours before they can put me in a loaner (rental) car. This is the exact opposite of what I was told on the phone when I made the appt. He says that they need to diagnose it before they can justify giving me a car. I would have thought the fact that the vehicle has 350 miles on it and it already needs service would be enough to justify giving me a car - but oh well.

I inform him that I have a meeting scheduled this morning, and can't hang around for 2 hours - and I was told that I could drop off the car in the morning and be on my way. Instead of apologizing for the miscommunication, he says "the loaner policy is explained in the manual". I tell him that I was under the impression that the information I was given by his service department on the phone was correct.

I figure it's just this particular dealership, so I thank him and head out. Long story short, I call 2 other dealers and get similar stories, with one dealer telling me that even if I drop my truck off at 7:45am on a weekday, the shuttle probably won't get me to work by 8:30 (I work about 8 miles from this dealer), and a rental definitely won't get me to work on time because of the hassle of going through Enterprise, which I've come to realize is GM's infinitely inferior policy when compared to Lexus' policy of having their own loaner cars.

I understand that GM is not Lexus, but it seems as though having some sort of option that allows your customers to make it to work on time when their brand new car needs service is just common sense logistics, not a "luxury" feature, no? Don't get me wrong, I love the truck so far, but I would like to hear some of your stories in terms of what you typically experience. Am I in for years of sub-par customer service?

I haven't had any issues, but then again I always have a ride out of the dealer. Never used a loaner.

The Chevy dealer my parents use give loaners immediately. not sure if it's "policy" for them or just good customer service.

The dealer near me wouldn't even give me a quote on a back up camera b/c the last owner installed an aftermarket camera. I told him to remove all the aftermarket wiring and camera and put in all OEM stuff and he said "I don't want to get involved." I later asked for my service records b/c the last owner used this dealer. I tried numerous times and only after I contacted the service manager was I able to obtain them. The service tech was dipping while dealing with me and sat there and chewed on small pieces of dip while talking to me. He really treated me like he didn't care and didn't want to help me. But when you are in the waiting room, there is nothing but letters from customers who praise them about their great service. I noticed not one was within the last 3 years. Needless to say, I won't be going back there. It probably depends on the dealer b/c I know some dealers are great and some not so great.

Welcome to GM service and repair, 2012 Edition.

It's getting worse every year. I just had to purchase a new part and pay for it out of my own pocket because my bumper to bumper warranty would not cover it. They claimed it wasn't known to be the problem. But it sure did fix the Tahoe after I purchased it and paid for it myself ($400). They also refused to pay the $40 tow bill.

This is probably why they just reported record profits in the last quarter. In the long run though, it will cost them a lot of money.

It's customer good service, something most dealers don't give a damn about any longer. The GM Chevrolet dealer in Orange, Virginia does the same thing. He has 3 or 4 new Impalas they issue out each morning as loaner cars. Next time I want a Chevrolet vehicle , I am going to them.

I've had a negative experience with 2 dealership and excellent service from 2. The bad one just didn't care who I was, what the problem was, our what knowledge I had. I was just the dumb stupid customer to them. Once was enough for me at those places, especially since one of those experiences involved failure to honor their warranty on body work they performed. The good ones are Gus Paulos Chevrolet in Salt Lake City, Utah and Hall Chevrolet in Chesapeake, Virginia. The only negative experience I can share about Hall Chevrolet was not their fault, but GMs directly. I had a car that required an engine rebuild sure to spun bearings and bent rods. GM did provide me with a loaner. The problem started with how GM packaged the crankshaft. The box was no bigger than the oil collar on the crank, thus the collar would be damaged in transit. It want until the 4th crank was ordered that GM figured out they needed to listen to the dealer and provide better packaging. Unfortunately, GMPP only provides a loaner for 21 days. It took about 6 weeks to get an undamaged crankshaft and the engine and car put back together. My wife and I were not in a position for that big of a rental car expense, so we sucked it up and found ways to share a car and still be in 2 different places while taking care of an infant. Other than that, this dealer has been amazing to work with. They've helped out big time with my sat/nav radio conversion. Today I had a tpms sensor fail. Even though they were busy they got me in immediately, fixed the problem, and got me out so that I could get some stuff done today. Absolutely amazing service.

It all depends on the dealership. I went to one that gave me the same story you had...they don't pay for loaners, have to go through enterprise, etc, etc. I went to another dealership with an appt for some work, and they had this huge fancy cafe style room with leather sofas, tv's, internet stations, free drinks, fresh baked cookies, popcorn, etc. When I pulled in, one person met me, looked up who my service writer was and escorted me and introduced me to him. Then someone else came up and asked if I needed anything out of my vehicle, and they drove it away, all before I could sit down with the service writer. They double checked what I needed done, and said he would be right back with my loaner...I figured there would be a ton of paperwork for a loaner, but all he did was ask for my license, and handed me the keys to a new 2012 Terrain. He made a copy of my license, and I asked if the Terrain was the smaller one, and the Acadia was the bigger one. His response was "yes, that's correct, do you want an Acadia? I can get one of those for you". When I went back later that day to pick it up, they had washed and vacuumed the truck, and had a little mint on the dashboard with a thank you card. I was so impressed, that's the first time I ever wrote a letter commending a dealership with their service department.

I figured if I ever needed to pay for work on my truck, I still might take it to them, just because I could probably eat the extra moneys worth in cookies and popcorn, and watch tv all day on a leather sofa!

Next time you go to the shop, you should make a video and post it on You Tube. That's the kind of service the majority of the population never sees anymore. I bet it would get 10,000,000 views!!

No way! If my wife sees what happens when I take her truck in for service, and have to wait all day for it to get done...she'll never let me take it again! I told her it's the usual smelly waiting room filled with uncomfortable folding chairs and a black and white tv....
