While after 236K miles anyone can expect a transmission that has worked for so long to eventually fail. The experience with the repair shop is what makes it difficult to deal with. This would would be my second vehicle and second transmission shop experience where things have gone bad. I have went from get you on your way friday maybe saturday to ready to install to still in assembly to not ready until Monday to seeing in pieces to authorizing overhaul to hopefully Monday 5pm.

While I am sure there are good shops around I have no choice to believe that in my experience there is no such thing. After apparently being confused with a gmc truck in the same shop. I finally got an answer to what went wrong.

The forward clutch had a fiber and steel plate fail and that is what was chattering.

Giving the mileage on unit it was deemed necessary to overhaul it.

The unit will be overhauled with new frictions, steels, bushings, seals, shift improvement kit, bonded piston, solenoids for shift 1-2 2-3 and one other, valve body plate, boost valving, beefed up forward sprag and torque converter. The price breakdown is as follows:

Labor to remove, disassemble, inspect, overhaul, and replace......$785

Parts.......................................................................................$1653.51

Tax.........................................................................................$121.95

Total........................................................................................$2560.46

I will post part numbers of components used when they become available.
It the meantime here are some pictures to enjoy.

True true they might just do a redneck fix and itl last just outside the shop and blow up again but for me personally my mechanic did my engine overhaul and it works really good and he did a super clean job so ill let him do my transmission too

My '98 2 door has 225K on the clock. After towing for a while I get a real hard shift going from 1st to 2nd. When the time comes I'm going with these guys. Check out their site. Worth 15 or 20 minutes of reading.
