The vats system only picks up a sensor in the ignition cylinder to confirm the cylinder has rotated to prevent the vehicle being hotwired. There is no transponder in the GMT800s. That's why car thiefs can just hammer a screwdriver into the ignition cylinder and force it to rotate starting the vehicle on these trucks.

For some reason I thought that changed after the 2002 MY and the 03-06 had transponder keys. I know my 02 isn’t a transponder and that’s why I put a hidden kill switch in it so it can’t be started. That sucks that the entire gmt800 platform is unsecured.

If you could charge by the trailer harness, couldn't you do the same thing by disconnecting the two cables off the starter? If you do that, you just need a coat hanger to hit the unlock button.

I don't like writing stuff like this, so if a mod has a reason to delete it, please do. If it came down to it, I wouldn't break the glass, I would drill right through the plastic handle. theres an open hole in the metal where the black plastic exterior door handle sits. It's about the size of a hot dog bun. If you go through that, the metal rods are right there. You would just pull up on it to open the lock. (have to do it all the time at picknpull when the handles are taken off). Then you can temporarily cove the hole to keep rain out. I would start behind the pull handle, and work back not to damage the metal. At least that way, you can just pull one and replace it to fix it for a few bucks instead of having damaged glass and replacing it.

You could dremel cut a notch in the end of the four seat bolts. Then use a screwdriver to unscrew all four seat bolts from under the cab. Now go and take the bed off. With the bed off you have access to the cab through the vents in the back. Take the vent off, and push the seat forward and over. You might need to take off the bolts on the other seat out in the same way, in order to get the center console to shift. Get a skinny teenager to stick their foot through, unlock it with their big toe, and pull open the handle with their other piggies, and voila, it'll open.

I've seen this method being used on quite a few different vehicles. If it does, it just costs about 10 feet of duct tape.

I tried it today. Not the duct tape part, but the pulling down of the window part. I rolled windows down a couple inches on both trucks and tried pushing down on the top edge of the glass to simulate what he was doing. I put about half my weight on the glass, it’s not budging as I suspected. Maybe if you were strong enough to break the regulator. I’ve replaced quite a bit of auto glass and I know regulators don’t do this afaik. I think that video is bunk.

Edit: kidding, not half my weight lol. But enough to know it wasn’t going to move without breaking.

You actually kind of had me worried for a sec there because I leave my dog in my trucks with the windows cracked a couple inches like a lot of people do and if that was a thing, all someone would have to do is stick their fingers in and pull down and have full access. Pretty sure car manufacturers would never hear the end of that if their vehicles were that vulnerable.
