So my truck is in the dealer for the noisy lifter issue which has gotten so bad over the last year or so that they are finally replacing them. Being the heads have to come off (or thats what I read anyway) so my question is should anything else be replaced while they are in there? Obviously it will be on my dime but I would be saving on the labor. Any suggestions?

Why do the heads have to come off to replace lifters? Am I missing something? Different heads?

the LS head aren't like the old SBC heads. the lifters are captured in a plastic locating tray that is under the head. the pushrods come up through a small hole in the head and into the rocker arm without guides as well. here's a shot without the heads on. you can see the bolt holes between the lifter pair bores that the trays bolt to.

it really depends on mileage and how you use it. close to or over 100k-water pump, timing set, and oil pump. possibly replace hoses as well. realistically, i'd have them pull the DoD lifters and associated parts and tune that crap out.

I have 72,*** miles and dont put many miles per year. Where is the oil pump located? In the pan I assume? I am looking to replace any items that will be removed to get to the lifters. How much for water pump and timing set from the dealer? Willing to spend a few hundred in parts being the labor is on them. Can they charge me labor to replace the pump and timing chain/set?

Its on the front of the motor.

Absolutely, they can charge you for the labor to do the pump and chain.
It has nothing to do with the lifters.

My question is do they need to remove the water pump off the front of the motor and or timing set in order to replace the lifters?
