You can fit 33's on the truck in stock fashion. In terms of keeping the truck, these vehicles are generally just as reliable as a Toyota, it just sounds like yours has had some deferred maintenance. I've owned 3 gmt400's and never had any major problems and all 3 had 150,000K + miles.
