Just got a new air cleaner housing today from the dealership. I noticed the factory one under the hood was cracked at one of the screw locations. Possibly bypassing a bunch of dirt. Couldn't really figure out why the top part was cracked because I never saw it like that before and I never over tightened the thing.

As it turns out the sealing surface of the air filter housing was uneven from the factory. As shown below you can see about a 1/4 inch taper towards two corners. The new filter is perfectly level. You might want to get a new filter housing if you are unsure if it is sealing and doing its job properly.

Good suggestion.
I went with an aftermarket open air filter so doesn't apply here, but I'm sure some will see this and go out and look to be sure theirs is ok.

it might have been flat too back when it was new. its plastic and its under the hood its a great place to warp. thats also why the filters have such thick rubber seals to take up small gaps. cracks in your filter box over time can also just from wear and tear or just that one pot hole. cold day or whatever and you hit a pot hole that jars the crap out of you but the vehicle seems fine. that same impact you felt from theoretical pot hole your air box also "felt". regardless good catch definitely shouldn't have cracks in your air box nice to see some people actually inspect thier vehicles.

Nah. Pretty sure it came like that from the factory. The plastic reinforced ribbing underneath isn't warpped at all. Its kind of a dead giveaway.
