New guy here subwoofer question

It sounds like all the boxes you've had were too large. When you tune as low as you are, most subs aren't designed to thrive down low, so it will level it out. Alternatively, a smaller box will level it out with a higher tuning.

This might be the case, because most of my boxes are usually on the large side of what the manufacturer recommends.

Just stating my personal experience. So whats a better way to simulate or design what size box is needed?

There is no accurate way to simulate, at least not with resources you have available. You have to go purely off of experience for any real accuracy. You know you go on the large side and it's peaky, and we know a smaller box won't be as peaky, so that says you should make the box smaller to get the sound you want.

hmm... Ill try it, but not sold on it. I have had better luck with larger low tuned boxes. but hey Im all for trying it.

You probably won't have as much output, but you never know till you try. Often a result of leveling response is a loss of output (because it was peaky before).

Ahh. yea thats why they always worked better, had the same output as the small peaky box, but now smoother and more even response.

If a smaller box was more peaky (within reason on size) then the port was too big.

The real answer? That has to do with Xmax, cone area, and motor force. The generic answer, 10-15 sq in of port per cu. ft.

Model what you had and then start playing with comparisons. You won't be modelling cabin gain, nor the effects of box position, but it will show you what changing gear will do. Blindly building boxes without understanding what the model will show you is crazy and ineffective.
