So thank you all for your replies. I had a mobile mechanic come out and yes, that Former friend broke a part of my steering where the ignition fits along with the ignition. As soon as I was able, he finally finished installing it all! That 'non-friend' is still in jail hopefully looking at 20-chomo. Dec 1st his dog, that animal control Refused to take twice, mauled my left arm while I was dragging him off my smaller dog. I had 2 surgeries in 5 days, but theysavedmy arm. This is my world. So now the new keys are "coded" and AutoZone tells me that since I have security system on my truck, I need to have it programmed. Just got off the phone with an auto locksmith who tells me that the 2000s have a different system than the newer ones and doesn't require programming keys. My original keys didn't have chips on them so I'm thinking he may be right. If someone can Please corroborate this or not I'd appreciate it!! 2000 Tahoe LS 5.3l Vortec.

theres no security chip in the gmt 800 trucks.
do we know what parts were changed? ignition harness? clock spring? why was he in the column in the first place?
does it crank and not start? or just dead when turned to crank?

If an ignition switch was replaced, it may not have had the gear teeth aligned properly when installed.

Good luck with that. Agree, I had a 01 1500 XL for 21 years, keys are just metal - no chip, no code. 2002 2500 XL same thing. Anyone that tells you about coding the key does not know what they are doing. Aftermarket kits won't change that. but making a mess of the column could have made a mess. Check all wires under there, and try to put the broken parts back as best as possible. any pics of how it looks now?
The Ignition Lock Cylinder Housing and new Ignition w/Coded keys were changed. Former friend [& likely his 2 young kids] was putting too much force on the steering wheel when the truck was off, but keys were still in it. I wasn't there. But when I got there, there was No turning of the wheel-maybe one inch either way, and the key would Not turn either. I had to tow it home.
Yes, I figured since my original keys have no chip I wouldn't need programming, just my key fob. I'll post an update later today!
Thanks. I thought the same thing. The mechanic brought in another mechanic who is a specialist on this. He put it all together. Unfortunately I didn't get pictures. I'm going to put the battery back in-it needed charging after 7 months. Likely will need to replace that next month when I get my check, then it's new tires. I'll post an update later!
No, I had a mechanic, actually 2 working on it. They just finished it. I had to wait to have my battery charged because its been 7 months! I'm going to try to start it today after I reinstall it. I'll post an update later! Thanks!
So, you are saying that NOW, when you insert the key and turn the tumbler, it spins/rolls freely and the ignition switch teeth move freely?
