New Onstar Agreement Update email

Checking the Tahoe forum and the Corvette forum I'd expect more people to be 'up in arms' about this email I got from Onstar. Basically going from 'court order' to 'giving away' our driving data.

btw, This is a technical thread, not a political big brother Onstar>GM>UAW>$>Feds discussion.

Anyway, I unplugged the cell cable and sat cable to the Onstar unit(the two FAKRA connectors), so they can't talk to me... yet, and GPS info isn't flowing to the Onstar HQ.

We all know our Iphones keep 30 days worth of GPS. My Raymarine nav system kept entire boating seasons of trips for several years, EPIRB's should go on when you need 'em.

Does anyone know the memory capacity of the Motorola GPS Oncore board(or Onstar) in the Onstar unit?

I'm working on a GPS/cell? 'default on' switch with a manual 'off' switch on the dash.

Generally Onstar is not too bad, btw, gotta run, I have to go out and check that RR tire pressure, my monthly Onstar email says it's down 1psi.

I don't subscribe to OnStar. After reading their updated Privacy Statement that takes effect December 1, 2011, I just called 1-888-466-7827 to get the "data connection" to my vehicle deactivated, and was told that someone from their "Customer Loyalty Team" would have to call me on Monday, September 19, 2011 between 8:00 A.M. and 11:00 P.M. EST to discuss the matter!!!!!!!

Geez, that ought to be an interesting phone conversation. I don't have OnStar, and it sounds like they're going to try and get me to subscribe, rather than deactivate the "data connection" to my vehicle.

Yeah, don't forget to bring up the part where, if you unsubscribe, they will still access and use(share) your data.

I just love that OnStar is keeping track of the time when I turn the ignition on and off, and when I refuel. Hey, OnStar, you can take the gas nozzle and shove it where the sun doesn't shine.

Thats very interesting. And to think if they can collect that info even if you dont have an account, I cant even imagine how many cars have been built with the onstar feature. Thats a whole lot of data

Yeah, like all things 'connected' there are always privacy issues.
Between my mobile, iPad, on star, computer, directv, credit/debit cards, I'm permanently tethered to the matrix.
There really are only two ways to approach this:
1. Spend every waking minute fighting it
2. Be indifferent to it
Picking one battle with on star whilst letting the other elements go is pointless.
RFID suppository anyone?

It goes something like this: John Q. Public purchased fuel at a Shell station at 1:30 P.M. on Tuesday, December 13, 2011. John's address is 123 Anywhere Street in Lubbock, TX. John likes to fuel at lots of Shell stations each week and drives a brand new Tahoe. If John doesn't have a Shell credit card with an address of 123 Anywhere Street in Lubbock, TX, you (Shell) might want to send him an application for a Shell credit card.

Oh, how about this sometime in the future: Someone was seen driving away from the scene of a ****** driving a red 2013 Escalade. Local law enforcement asks OnStar for a list of all red 2013 Escalades in the vicinity of such-and-such an address at 3:40 A.M. on the morning of January 5, 2014.

Don't think it can happen? Think again.

Those cheap pocket sized chinese cell/gps/3g jammers work fine for the other stuff, the trouble is I don't know when OnStar polls my Tahoe for a data dump.

Law enforcement pays OnStar for a database showing where the most vehicles percentage-wise drive six miles or faster over the speed limit. Guess where the police will do their next speedtrap?
