Yesterday bought 97 Tahoe 2 dr, 4x4 w/ 86k miles. Always here in CA... No Service History other than fresh front brakes and oil/filter. What are the best fluids to use for the auto trans, both diffs, transfer case, radiator and power steering? I read that many new fluids are out there and have great properties... This vehicle goes with my daughter to college in Connecticut in September for 3 years... Want to make sure its in GREAT shape... Thanks in advance... Mark

Mark,
I don't have it off the top of my head, but I've always tried to use AC Delco/GM fluids whenever possible. There are a few articles on this site for the trans and diffs and the fluid for your specific application. Depending on your truck and the 4x4 system it has, there are differences with the rear and transfer case fluids.

For Power Steering, I've personally always used Lucas and for the radiator Dex Cool. Most people don't realize this, but Dex fluid turns accidic over time and must be completely drained and refreshed every few yrs (i don't remember specific interval).

My apologies for not answering your question more specifically. Someone on here may have the specific part #/description available for the fluids you mentioned.

I'm not sure of the "best" products to use but I can say that I've had great success using Lucas Oil additives in my engine and tranny. I also know that if you start using synthetic oil at 86k you might have leaks. I did. I just use the "recommended" gear oil in my diffs and transfer. There is no "best" coolant (imo). They all serve the same purpose. Maybe someone here can chime in on their favorite brand oil or give you a recommended weight to use.

completely agree on engine oil - if that truck has grown up using conventional, stick with it or you could develop leaks...not to mention spending almost twice as much per oil change with synthetic.

Same with coolant - I think i've always personally used Prestone, but I don't think there is much of a difference in coolants.
