New to GM and have questions

1. My 2017 Tahoe Premier is my first GM product so I'm new to GM.

What is all this LT and LS engine stuff....I have never understood what all thos engines references meant can someone shed a little light?

2. I was at my dealer yesterday getting black bow ties installed...the front one lights up...pretty cool....I mentioned to the service tech about Borla exhaust and AFM Delete or disable...he said that can do all this at the dealership ....basically, said they reccomend cold air intake, Borla exhaust and a tune through a west coast vendor they use....he said they have a computer that can communicate with their west coast vendor and they can tune out AFM, improve shifting and even change to a premium fuel if I want....I asked about my GM warranty and they said if i continue to service my vehicle at this dealership (also where I purchased my tahoe) it wont be an issue. He told me they tune all there Cameros on delivery and they tune a lot of tricks because people want more performance. I'm new to all this just looking for a brief summary at to what all this does and what are these tuner devices?

Welcome and congrats on your purchase!

You've found your way to the 2007-2014 section, but the answers are still basically the same.

1) LT and LS, at least in these trucks, will refer to the various trim levels of the interior and exterior. LS is the most basic trim level and then there are varying "stages" of the LT trim level ranging from less basic to fully loaded. Chevy also had a LT1/LT4 engine, that was used in many cars back in the 90's, but it was more or less replaced by the LS series of motors in the late 90's. Trucks went to the LS based engine around 2000.

2) Have the dealership put it in writing on company letterhead, and signed by the General Manager for good measure, that the tune they install will not effect the warranty. Unless this tuning is offered through GM performance parts, GM will not accept warranty work for the drive line that they can attribute to a tune. If it's in writing, the dealership is on the hook for those repairs though. The mods mentioned are pretty common mod for folks to make. The Borla exhaust is more of a personal preference though, there are plenty of options that net similar results with slightly different sounds. You WILL want to disable the AFM before you go for your louder exhaust though, or you will hate life the first time that the engine goes into v4 mode. Black Bear is a forum supporter, and has lots of positive reviews. It might be worth having a conversation with them, to see what their recommendation is for what you have and what you want. It's also a chance to compare the prices you are being quoted by the dealership.

LT is also the latest engine option.
Though I'm not sure which vehicles they are available in, well besides the Vette.

LS engines have been around a while. They’re usually aluminum blocks and heads and come in many sizes up to the LS7. Even though they’re small blocks they can range from 6 litres like my 05 corvette up to Almost 7 litres. The LT Motors are making a return with many sizes as well. Most trucks have LT engines. I wouldn’t say one is better. LS are popular with builders due to good power from a small engine space and tons of them are out there so the aftermarket is huge. What does your Tahoe have?

LS' range from 5.7 to 7.0.

I believe he has a 5.3.

You’re probably right. I wasn’t sure if they changed. My 07 Denali has a 6.2 but it’s not an LS

Sure it is the LS engine. They started around 95 or 96 and the gm ‘recycled’ the lt badging fron there previous engine designations years ago in like 2012-13-14

Unless you swapped motors from a newer truck

No swapping. I’ll look it up with the VIN and see what it is. I’m fairly certain I have an iron block but aluminum heads. You’re probably right since it’s a small block with 372 ci.

They are all ls engines, diff designations for diff bores, afm, dod, etc, etc...
