Would these make a better starting point for a retrofit than aftermarket stock headlights?

No ... unless you really want that led strip that will likely start failing within a few months.

Before I knew much I was looking at some aftermarket lights like this and I nearly pulled the trigger on a few.

THEN I found Soulsea's write-up and I began a new three month process on researching projector retrofits. I personally did the LED switchback mod on the DRL/driving lights and I'm having a projector retrofit done as we speak in new oem replica assemblies.

My end thoughts on changing any lighting to the outside of a vehicle is that it's not anything to be messed around with unless it's done correctly and safely. All of these cheap Chinese replacement headlights with fake projectors are all dangerous. Even if you insert a PNP hid kit you're still at the very least blinding the hell out of the rest of us.

All in all my opinion is to do it right and you'll be happier than ever.

The light out put sucks as Soulsea says, I retrofitted mine with morimoto projectors, deleted halo operation, way too dim. Not trying to hijack this, I updated my pics in another thread. Those housings look good, as long as you can see.

Had those for about a month and yanked them out cause the output sucked. I also had a good set of HID's from DDM tuning.....

Okay, let's back up a minute, there's no need to attack the OP this much.

The picture above is reserved for people who run PnP HID kits in halogen reflectors ... here's a nicer way to demonstrate the difference to oncoming traffic:

HOWEVER ... that's not what the OP has done. He's bought aftermarket housings with fake molded halogen projectors that usually result in piss poor output with or without HIDs. Less distracting to oncoming traffic but very dangerous because of inadequate forward lighting.

That said, different designs are always coming out, so there's always a chance that the OP may have run into a brand that's actually better than most, much in the way the DEPO aftermarket housings work decently in NBS trucks.

Hence why it's important for him to post output shots, so that other members may see what to expect if they are considering the same housings.
