Purchased a 2022 Yukon Denali with about 65k miles on it about a month ago
All good for about 3000 miles, now won’t move in reverse. The “R” shows up fine as expected in the dashboard when the reverse button is pressed, and the backup camera goes on, but the car does not move in reverse. The engine seems like it is in neutral. Now also getting an engine light (yellow steady) and an onstar diagnostic message saying transmission problem. Have service appointment Monday. Any guesses? Will post findings.

I thought there was some known issues about the valve bodies in the 10 speeds. Maybe that's what they'll find.

Sounds like an internal transmission problem. Maybe you can get lucky and there will be a valve body solenoid wire that came disconnected. Otherwise it will likely be more involved, as mentioned either valve body or maybe a clutch pack. I have not studied up on the 10 speed, so do not know if there are sprags for reverse as well.

Generally a generic OBDII tool can read any code that triggers the SES/CEL/MIL. It might give you a clue as to what may be going on?

If you don't know anything about it then why speculate?

OP, do you have an extended warranty? If not I'd suggest taking it to an independent transmission shop but that's me. Good news/bad news is it's not an uncommon failure mode caused by pressure bore wear. At a dealership level GM will not allow us to use an aftermarket "fix" that will most likely solve your problem assuming it's failed in the same way all the others do. Sometimes you can get lucky and clear the stored DTCs and it'll be fine for awhile. GM will only replace the full valve body assembly and they're currently very hard to get in short order for the gen2 10L80.

If you're out of warranty the next gen kit for a gen2 ERS transmission is about the same cost as a valve body from GM. Get it tested for pressure bleeds and go from there.

So you understand my background and experience?

No speculation here, I think I gave pretty solid advice.

The only thing I do not know 100% with the 10 speed is exactly how reverse is obtained between clutch packs/bands/sprags/planetaries.

Could be a hard part failure as well.

Best thing to do first is read and understand the OBDII error code and use this as a point of reference to start from. Search any tech bulletins and if this is a "common" failure, any shop that has addressed this before will likely know what the "common" failure mode is and be able to give the OP the "bad news" before they even pull the vehicle in the shop.

If a shop is diagnosing things before they pull it into the shop based on previous assumptions run far far away from that place.

That's not how you diagnose anything

Sounds like either a reverse circuit solenoid is not moving the valve , the valve is stuck, or debris is restricting flow.

#PIP6008C: 10L80 DTC P2714 - (Jan 24, 2025)
Condition
DTC P2714, with or without reverse engagement.
Cause
The (500) Input Internal Gear may have separated from the (501) Direct Overdrive Sun Gear Shaft due to the (502) Input Internal Gear Retainer Ring being dis-lodged on transmission assemblies built at the Romulus Assembly Plant between Julian dates 24158 thru 24249. See SI Doc ID# 4356498.

Correction
Perform an internal trans inspection to determine if the R2S3 retaining ring is dislodged (Item #502) to replace the retainer if found dis-lodged.
