Sounds like either the starter or a cracked flex plate. A pretty common issue on these is the starter drive gear return spring fails and lets the gear bump against the ring gear on the flywheel. Was under there last night , joints felt pretty tight, shaft spun cleanly. Didn’t see any clear rubbing though

Yes, but it requires removing the starter and holding it gear end down to see if the drive gear falls down to the end of the shaft. But, if your starter is original, it's not the worst thing in the world to replace it with a new one anyway. Eventually it *is* going to fail, so it's one less thing to worry about.Interesting
