Noise when starting, similar to older cars when you try to turn them on when they are already on.

I have an 05 Yukon and lately, but not every time, it makes the noise I described in the title. I have read that it can either be the Ignition Switch or the Starter but if you change the Switch, the starter may still be at fault and when it finally goes out, it may break the flywheel as well. This was described on a different vehicle.

Is this the same diagnosis for my Yukon and if so, would you recommend changing both out? Is there a test for this? Thanks in advance!

Sounds the the Orc in the starter staying engauge longer than it should. If that's the case, a new starter is needed

Got the starter replaced with new one this morning. Just about 30 minutes ago while driving down a steep hill going about 5mph, the truck turned off and did not want to turn on right away. After a minute or two it turned on. We drove home and after looking up some info; it looked like it could be bad ignition switch however the mechanic said it could be fuel pump. (Over phone) I respectfully disagree because of the issues I was having before. I called Napa and they said there are 2 components. The switch and sleeve. Cost about 85 or 90 for both. Anyone have any thoughts on what it could be? I hate the thought of it turning off on my wife and daughter.

The ignition switch is certainly a logical cause of an engine not starting/running. Sometimes replacing parts that are not real expensive is a way of crossing a possible cause off your list. I would change the switch.

If you have a hunch go with it. Having that issue on the highway with your wife and daughter is definitely a scary thought for sure

Thanks for your replies. I also don't want to go blindly shooting into the woods with only six bullets in the chamber.

I had the old starter tested at a different place from where I bought the new one and they said it passed with flying colors so I figured a way to return the new one as it sounded very weird when starting. I had the old one put back in. I am now driving her Yukon and she is driving mine. the past week and a half I haven't had any issues when starting or it stopping on me but I haven't run it like I did that one day it turned off. Now playing the waiting game.
