I have a 96 5.7L Hoe and had a question about how many gears they have. I have always read that they have 4 gears and mine definitely has 5. When they say it has four does that count the overdrive? This is a total newb question but I have always wondered about it. Thank you!

That last "shift" you are feeling is the torque converter locking up. :)
It is a four speed trans................

95 TwinTT is right, nothing before 2007 had more than 4 gears, that last small jerk you feel in the truck is just the TC locking up all the way.

Just wondering because this "jerk" drops me 3-400 rpms when Im just creeping on the gas. If in on the gas it will drop 1500 rpms or more. Thats a large jerk. My hoe shifts at 10, 20, 30, and 50 mph when creeping on the gas. Or the TC locks up at 50. Is that how it is for everyone else? I run 80 mph at 2,050ish rmps.

Right as everyone said. Mine didn't actually feel like another gear till after the rebuild. Before then there wasn't much of a "shift" feel ...

Oh alright. I was just confused because it feels and responds exactly the same as a gear shift. And yea I have considered changing gears becuase it wont tow any kind of weight at all once the TC does lock up. I eventually want to get a more aggressive cam, ram air intake, lt headers, and maybe e-fans so I think I will wait a while to regear it. Thanks for the help guys! I always wondered what was going on. haha

I rebuilt my tranny about 3months ago and around town it shifts perfect but lets say i go down the highway at 70-80mph for 10min and then come to a red light...whenever i start off from a dead stop the tranny shifts hard...could that be the converter??? I didnt replace the converter and hearing yall talk about the converter locking up makes me wonder if mines not sticking???

What do Ya'll think???
