Ticking, could be a cracked manifold or some broken bolts on the exhaust manifolds. Extremely common, but wouldnt know unless looked / could hear it.

Absolutely guaranteed a noise in an engine can be pin pointed without "dropping" an engine. What a crock of crap. Mr. Merk is right about the actuators. If the engine was replaced under warranty, is it still in another warranty or out of that warranty? You need some good advice so wait and see what the new tech says. Good luck.

I would def get another opinion if you're already $3600 and they want another $2100. Sounds kinda shady.

Update
Picked up the truck and it is not making the noise I heard when I first picked it up. Not sure what is going on here. They said what they thought it was a lifter or can shaft. Still going to get a second opinion from my local shop.

Going off what they said before I would look them dead in the eye and ask how they can "guess" that it is lifter or cam related without dropping the engine. Grasping at straws when you picked up with no noise. WOW!

I can tell you they wouldn't be "dropping the engine" but probably pulling a cylinder head to inspect the camshaft lobes. This is common. Generally if a lifter is ticking (from being scored) there is a very very good chance the associated camshaft lobe is also scored.

I wouldn't even price it that way. If I knew the lifters were noisy I would price you cam AND lifters as worse case scenario. I'd need you to commit to that because once we get that far in, it would be a GIANT waste of your money to turn back if it ended up needing a camshaft. If you got lucky and the cam was fine, then great! But not likely.

900 bucks for battery and cables??? Did come with a barrell of KY Jelly??? :wtf:

Or are the cables gold plated, or something???

Seriously... As has been suggested already (and I guess you figured it out yourself, too), do not go to that dealer anymore. There are plenty of other shops that can work on these things with much better prices.

The cables consist of three "harnesses" that route throughout the engine bay. I believe its about 2.9 labor hours. It comes out to about $750 after tax. A good ACDelco battery is about $145 before tax.

As a service manager, everything in this thread is why I own GMT800s.

Just saying.

I have had two of these (I guess the diesel would still count), my cousin has had three, know countless others also and none have experienced any of the issues in this thread. Not sure why you would discredit a generation of truck. I did have a GMT800 that had multiple problems and a friend that had the same truck with none. It is a crap shoot and is with any car and manufacturer.

I guess being around these trucks 12 hours a day 5-6 days a week since 2008 makes you a little jaded, especially when you only see the broken ones.
