Anyone have any idea why this code keeps getting thrown? Would a k&N filter oil residue throw it? I also noticed the previous owner had some sort of ebay resistor mod which we removed.

could be your mass airflow sensor. Clean it good and see what happens.

Can you just clean the MAF with a normal clean microfiber towel? Or need special precautions?

no no no. Don't touch it. very delicate and sensitive wires that read air temp and flow and send that info to the computer which then adjusts fuel mixture. if you have some start fluid you can use that. You can buy MAFS cleaner for $4. Spray it dirrectly on the MAFS and that's it.
