And to his comment, I’d reply that his station wagon can’t pull 5,000lbs of speed boat up a mountain! Lol.

Well, his 1971 Pontiac wagon had the 455, so I'm sure it could hold it's own. The later GM wagons like the one in the OP were not quite as powerful. BTW, most of today's SUV's can't haul 5,000lbs either.

Those aren't SUVs, those are crossovers. Those are for 40-70 yr old grandmas who may or may not yet have grandchildren.

And the frame and chassis? Axles?! Probably not designed to handle that kind of weight! And by the way, my suv can pull 5,000lbs of boat and trailer. Lol.

Just for giggles, I looked it up. It seems the full-sized GM B-body wagon like the OP could tow 3k lbs base and 5k lbs with the towing package. Haven't found the spec on the older C-body wagons.

I never worry about the towing capacity that much because most vehicle can be modified easily to increase the capacity somewhat, provided there's enough HP and a tranny cooler. But stopping the beast, that is the big issue. Talking about towing on mountains......we went on a trip towing a travel trailer one time. I noticed the friend who's car it was, riding the brakes and then pumping them to control speed as we went down a long steep grade. We finally reach the bottom and some semi-level grade and he blew right through a red traffic light because he had toasted the brakes.

I've gone down grades with a 4-door dually, hauling a Cigarette racing powerboat. Hell, the trailer was already too much weight.......( Betty Cook's - KAAMA boat )
You are ******* the brakes...... Then off peddle ( to cool brakes)..... Then hard again.....

( If anyone knows about the "Grapevine" highway north of Los Angeles, you know !! )
