Oil change after 5000 miles??

So me and the family went on a trip of about 5000 miles or more. The day before the trip the Tahoe(2003) oil system asked for an oil change and so I did. After the oil change I reset the oil life on the Tahoe but the oil is rated for 3000 miles (5w-30). It has not ask for an oil change yet but just wanted to know how the oil life system works or if it can be reliable. I usually change the oil in the other cars wen I reach the max life of the oil that is indicated by them.

oil these days lasts a good long time. my 01 tahoe went around about 5k miles between the indicator light coming on.

does your tahoe have steering wheel controls? if so, hit the lower left button until the oil life monitor shows you the life left in the oil. shows % life remaining. its not a science that truck uses to gauge it. just watches your driving habits and calculates from there a safe point to change it. if you use synthetic i would say 7-8k miles (some poeple say 10 which i think is ok in certain conditions imo), which is longer than the oil life monitor on the vehicle will give you.

No it does not have steering wheel controls its the very basic Tahoe. Guess I'll just have to wait until the change oil in the dash board comes on then. But then it is safe to keep that oil still running in the engine until the Tahoe ask for oil change? I use regular oil, none of that synthetic stuff.

itll be fine. any decent dyno oil (regular oil) will be fine to wait until the indicator light comes on.

GM certified program now only pays for the free maintenance at 5K.
