Are folks changing the oil at regular intervals these days still like 3 months or 3k, what ever comes first?

Or do you follow the oil life meter? I'm currently at 61%.

I know most new cars no longer follow 3mon/3k but just wondering when I should change the oil.

I've been following the oil life meter and usually bring it in around the 15% life left mark. So far all my oil changes have been done at the dealership since they are free for the first two years. I seem to be getting around 6-7k miles between changes.

I go by the meter since it's an engineered and calculated algorithm, but I also go by the color of the oil. Running full synthetic, I have no fears with 6-7K OCIs.

Admittedly this is my first car with an oil life monitor. I've always run synthetic between 3-5k. If it's hot weather with a lot of idling, I'll change it sooner. If the oil starts to smell bad, I change it. Cooler weather and freeway miles, I'll run it closer to 5k. It was always an "eyeball" measurement for me.

I'm watching my monitor now, we'll see where it takes me. I'm at 96% now

I got it changed after the first 1k miles and then again after 5k. From here on out I'll bring it in when the meter hits 30% or so.

It depends on your setup. With an oil cooler you will have no problems with 6-7k. Even without 5-6k should be fine. Some people are lazy and hardly bother at all. Don't fret about it too much but do it around 6. Just when you do it avoid the dealers and if you take it to the local 15 minute oil change place tell them to touch nothing but the oil, filter and grease nipples

I have gone 155K and burn no oil in my 2005 Yukon SLT, I use the oil meter and change at about 20% which has worked out to about 5k miles. Use Valvoline Max Life, great stuff, prevents leaks too.

If your still under warranty i would continue using the dealer. Most dealership will use any excuse in the book to not cover something under warranty. If you do it yourself or have those 15 min shops do it the dealer will have no recore the oil changes were done and may use that as an excuse.

Agree 100%. The oil changes on these things is crazy cheap even at the dealer. Not sure why anyone would go somewhere else.
