If the oil is seeping from the top of the filter, it MAYBE a filter gasket issue. A lot of times (due to heat) the filter gasket dislodges from the filter, and sticks to the engine block itself. Unknowingly the new filter (with gasket) is installed over it, consequently "a leak of oil".

I had a leak there that came from the oil cooler connection block right above the filter.

I also had a bad rear seal on my differential and it was flinging fluid that was seeping out of the seal. the filter and seal are right next to each other. worth a look, a dry differential is an expensive repair

Not sure I understand, do you mean a bad rear seal of the engine (where the torque converter is) or a bad rear seal of the transmission (where the driveshaft is)? The oil filter and diff are nowhere near each other.
