Hey everyone. I have to do my oil pan gasket soon since it has a bad leak on my 2003 Yukon xl 5.3. I have done this before on a Silverado, but the starter side dust cover was missing so I did not have to worry about messing with the starter. Well by the looks of it, it seems like I can just remove the bolt for this dust cover and I should be able to drop the pan out without the cover impeding it. Does anyone have experience with this being true. I just gm don’t want to fight the starter when I do this repair and waste an hour of my time. Thanks for any input.

I didn't remove my starter when I replace the gasket. I do remember removing the plastic cover next to the starter

Did you loosen the bolt that attaches the cover to the side of oil pan. I’m sure since that cover has a hole that surrounds the starter you can just let hang loose then reposition when your putting everything back together.

Oh man...I should do this as well. And put in a high flow oil pump. Heard this was tough on a 4x4.

Yes, that cover just hangs.

Not hard at all on fwd. I can have the whole front end out in 20 minutes. But you can just drop it down without removing to do the pan.
Oh. Ok.

So how does the pan and pump job on a 4x4 compare to my recent gearbox/pitman/Idler/tie rods job?

I don't have buddies waiting to help me.

To be honest (sight on seem) usually you should do rear engine plate. That is probably what is leaking. If not it will . But you have the pull the transmission to reseal it.

okay perfect. That is what I was hoping would be the case. I just think pulling the starter is just a waste of time and effort since that plate can just hang there while the pan is off.
