I know the damage is already done because there is no way you're gonna get the remains of that super hardened tap out of there but for next time. Put some anti-sieze on the tap. Turn it in a few turns and then back it out even if it is still going smooth. You need to clean the metal shavings off of the tap otherwise the tap will bind and break. The anti-sieze is there to help lubricate the tap aswell as to catch the shavings. Clean the tap off and apply new anti-size. Go in with the tap a few more turns and repeat the process. I've done what you did and learned my lesson and had someone explain this to me. Do it this way all the way in and you will never break another tap off in a hole.

Good luck with the head job. Don't get discouraged. On the bright side your engine will get a bit of a refresh. LOL

A tech I worked with broke an alternator mounting bracket bolt off On an Audi head and proceeded to drill and tap as you did and ended up with a broken tap also. Being this was a 2012 A6, we really didn't want to have to pull the heads and the tech looked like he was about to quit his job after a full day of disappointments. Me and the Senior tech at the time decided to jump in as he basically gave up and was in "pout and stare at it mode".

We ended up welding a bolt to the tap (just the tap) and that held and we were able to extract the tap (aluminum head). The tack welds had to be accurate, hot and quick but it did work in this case. I don't know if the tap is in the hole or some of it is protruding in your case.
