im a little late but this is what i did. When i opened mine up, I painted them Black. I drilled 3 small holes so some light shines through. I Put yellow led and wa-la Still legal in a sense.

That's pretty slick. Maybe I'll pull em apart again and do something like that. Are they functioning LEDs?. If so how did you wire them?

Manny......did you cut the lip off when you took them apart? It sounds like you just put them in the oven and slowly worked them apart rather than using a dremel and cutting off the lip. I'd be interested in how you got them open. I'm not a big fan of cutting the lip off and would like to avoid that if at all possible.
