now I have basically 2 garmins, 1 is a TREAD and it has a crapload of maps and even shows private property lines and the whole bit, you can switch to topo maps or filter it however you want. A lot of times we end up going where there is no cell service so a gps is a must have, ya you can download maps on apps and stuff but I still prefer a gps or thomas guide if all else fails, that happened once too lol, stupid gps power cable took a crap and I think we were way out in utah somewhere

skip to about 4 minutes, in the beginning she just whines about the mount, which it does not come with a automotive mount, it comes with a roll bar mount, I had to buy a aftermarket automotive mount off of amazon. she also mentions it sync's with the garmin inreach mini2 (emergency satellite communicator) which I also have but I didn't know they synced (interesting) i'll have to check that option out. I bought the non-gmrs version of the tread, they come with or without a built in trail radio. I don't know what she is talking about it not charging it comes with a car charger and it has a monster battery which does take some time to initially charge before turns on if it has sat a long time.

That Garmin seems plenty sufficient.

Just curious if anybody's ever gone the route of replacing an entire rear end with the gearing they're after, like from a wrecked truck? It's just another way to go and I was considering how much trouble it might be. Seems like it could possibly be a bit cheaper if nothing else. Obvious issue is not knowing the true condition of the diff or the axles or the rotors, etc.

I know some members have done it, I don't think it is all that difficult. only issue I can think of off hand is I think it has been noted that the yoke may be different.
one guy did it fairly recently and he ordered it from a wrecker and it arrived with a bent mount but he was able to work around that. If I remember the name I will tag them
@swathdiver might recall

Lots of us have done it. I bought an axle and basically zero timed it with new gears of a different ratio. It's working beautifully.

You can always swap the brakes over and it doesn't cost much to replace the wheel bearings and seals in the axle tubes. Just buy the lowest mileage axle you're willing to spend for and be wary about buying one from a truck that was wrecked in the back or rear quarters.

Since I was re gearing and didn't want to do it twice, I just went ahead and bought a used front differential with the gears I was changing to and it has about 80K miles less than my truck. It's been quiet as a mouse too.

Very interesting. I've talked to about 10 different shops in my area and most don't do differential work like I'm considering (LSD install and regearing). One shop that is an actual differential shop gave me a standard rate of $2400 for any combo of diff and gear set. I thought that was a little odd.

The last place the guy seemed very technical and knowledgeable of all the fine tuning and specifics of getting it all just right, took the time to calculate it all up and get back to me, but of course quoted me $2850 total for parts and labor.

Now I'm overanalyzing, nitpicking and trying to justify the cost. I guess it's just part of the process. Ha. Wish I could just do the job myself like the vast majority of maintenance and small projects I've done to the truck over the years.

The guy has a set rate, the prices for the parts don't change much from axle to axle in the GM stuff. Some he makes a little less on, some a little more. He probably has agreed upon prices with his supplier as well.

I used AAM and GM OE parts for mine. Spent about $670 for the gears, bearings and seals. Also replaced the axle shafts, wheel studs, brakes, anchor block, backing plates, rear cover, etc. Bought specific and generic tools to make the job easier and quicker as we have at least three trucks with the same axle at present and can handle the smaller and larger ones from AAM now as well for side jobs.

Well if you think he sounds legit, that helps. $2400 sure sounds a lot better.
