Absolutely. I've done a few this way. When you do, you may want clean the shift linkage with some compressed air. Dirt and rubber bits can build up from the old torn boot.

My replacement came today in the mail. Will be trying it over the weekend. Looks like I might have to remove the steering column plastic cowl to get the base in without messing it up.

Removing the dash bezel will give you more room. It just pulls straight out. You do not have to remove the knee bolsters.

Very nice write up. May be a bit overkill. I just replaced my friends shift boot. One drop of WD-40 and it slid right over the shift knob. It also helped being a warm day.
Trust me, I tried to slide the new boot over the shifter several times. I tried by putting a small amount of WD40 on the shifter and heated the boot...no dice. In fact it caused a small tear so I stopped. It did expand considerably but just not enough to get over the shifter end.

So in the end I performed the steps I outlined and I'm a happy camper. But I am a firm believer in the K.I.S.S. principle so however anyone succeeds that's all that matters!

I literally did mine in 60 seconds. I ripped the old, torn boot out. Sprayed Silicone lubricant on the new boot and shifter, and it slid on with a little side-to side motion.

The boot is about $10 at my local stealer. If not, online like GMpartsdirect. Access to the connector for the tow wire in under the steering column. Hopefully the button is not broken, my understanding is that the button is not replaceable/removable. If so, people usually swap to Denali or escalade leather shifter.
