I am working on a 2005 yukon xl denali 2 wd the rear end is the 8.62 locker rear end with 10 bolt pan i pulled everything apart the front bearing is the one that was bad but i pulled the pinion and did all the bearings anyway when i started to put it back together the pinion wont tighten back up no matter what i do it goes in and out about 1/2 an inch like something is missing out of it when i pulled the yoke back off it the bearing was past the spline so im assuming it is going on as far as it can i tried it with the new crush sleeve which didnt even get touched that i can tell i used the old crush sleeve i even tried it with no crush sleeve and it will not get tight any ideas as to why this would happen or what im missing here

Welcome to the forum and yes, pics. Leave a race or shim out? I don't rebuild them but isn't there a crush collar that is supposed to be there?

Did you replace both pinion races? How does the pinion fit/pattern with the ring gear? Really sounds like a got ina hurry and just forgot this.....or wrong bearings. Good luck.

Are you saying the yoke slides on and seats where it should and that the pinion nut bottoms all the way out and still have the slop? Pics would be a great help, whether you might think it would be or not. Want to see an exploded view of all the parts and compare old bearing(s) and race(s) and also when installed want to see the gap or play where your concern is.

Agreed, a half inch of play is a good amount for something to not be left out.

Take a picture of the slop one way then the other. A video would be better.

Pull it all out, lay it out on a bench and take a picture of all the pieces. Then a pic of the inside of the housing.

How difficult was it to get the old races out of the housing? Were they loose and fell out? Was there a lot of metal in the oil? Maybe the bad bearings wore the housing, had that happen to an 8.8 ford diff once.

Adding to above....and that crush washer is ABSOLUTELY necessary and cant be "left out". Get back to the basics and compare bearing numbers. Look at exploded view of pinion and see if you dropped something on the floor or it fell in your pumpkin.

I did change both bearings and races I only left the crush sleeve out just to see if it would tighten down I didn't leave it out i put it back in I have an exploded view of the diff on all data and I don't see anything missing the old bearings were tight it was only making a noise no play or anything the gear oil had no metal filings looked new and I haven't put the the rest of the rear end in never got that far I put the pinion in and it wouldn't tighten down so I didn't put anything else in as for the old races they didn't just fall out it took a little force to get them out like you would expect
