We sell pioneer and I steer customers away from this turd. It's slow and is not fluid at all. And out of every 5 we sell we have to warranty 3 because of glitches or freezing up

Hey guys, I just bought a 2013 summit white tahoe and have been reading up in these forums (and around the net) to research on some accessory items for it. I have come across this radio alot though...

First off, you guys are looking at the SPH-DA01 which is last years model (The Original AppRadio. That is why it is so cheap. ($150 in the link in the OP)

You guys might want to take a look at the current model which is the SPH-DA100 (The AppRadio 2). Most people actually get these models because of their integration with smartphones.

Those in the know usually follow two options:

A. Use it with their jailbroken iphone for total phone control from the head unit (there is a separate app this requires that would never be allowed on the App Store, hence why it needs to be jailbroken)

or

B. Use it with their MHL or HDMI compatible Android phone, with an app call ARLiberator. This offers full control of a rooted Android phone from the head unit. The phones display is mirrored onto the head unit and can be controlled from the head unit.

I've done quite a bit of research and have ended up at appradioforums.com where you can find more information on how to set it up.

Cheapest i have found the appradio 2 for is $329. The ARLiberator app costs $30, but users don't seem to mind as there is no other *great* solution for mirroring your android smartphone from any vendor.

From the videos i've seen on Youtube it works pretty well. If you use your smartphone in your car and constantly find yourself using it for music or podcasts (or even video for passengers), then this is a good solution.

I've decided to wait to see what the AppRadio 3 offers (hopefully it will be at CES in a couple of weeks) in hopes that it comes with better hookups for audio

the appradio 2 only comes with 2 2-volt preamp outputs if i remember correctly. and the RMS and peak wattage is kinda low.

Thanks for all the input guys. I think I'm going to go the tablet route at some point.

thought about that but the only reason i passed on a tablet like the Nexus 7 or Ipad was because I wanted to keep AM/FM radio functionality just in case.

is there a way around that? Also are you able to get SiriusXM with a tablet setup? (without using the app and thus using up your data)

From what I've seen in order to get the best of all worlds you'll want to keep your he'd unit to keep AM/FM capabilities(although most all companies are hopping on the iheartradio app) and Sirius/XM. I could imagine if you drive a lot though that any tablet setup is going to be really data intensive. That's another good question for someone that is running a tablet setup. I have unlimited on my phone but I think sprint is the only company that even offers it anymore if you are getting a new plan.

the biggest downside to the app radio is this.....when you dont have your phone hooked up to it then you have a $300+ am/fm radio. spend a few extra and get something like a kenwood dnx5190. waaay better unit overall and only in the $500 range. its got garmin nav, bluetooth, plays dvds (with easy bypass of just grounding wire), ipod control, siriusxm ready, and it plays cds.

I guess my question is, if you purchased an appradio (a radio that's main function is smartphone connectivity) why would you not have your phone hooked up to it?

The kind of person that purchases this type of radio probably already exclusively uses their phone for music or podcasts in the car, and potentially uses their phone to consume video media as well. (perfect for road trips or for passengers).

I don't think anyone has over looked the fact that this radio doesn't have cd/dvd capability. I just think some people have moved passed physical media. I also think that trend will continue as time moves forward.

Of course if you still use cd's and dvd's, anybody is welcome to buy a head unit with that capability.

This head unit limits your ability to get in the car and just go. Plus if you're in areas where you have no service, you're shit out of luck. Especially with the large amount of data that people have stored in the cloud and not on the actual device. No thanks. I prefer my AVIC with a large ipod. I just don't see the benefit of the appradio...

You can only link it to one phone so if your wife drives your truck then she has nothing to use but an fm radio. Until you use this radio first hand you don't know how bad it is. It looks good on paper, that's it
