TYF Newbie
So my stock radio broke and I decided to step it up and go all out this time and get Pioneer's new AVH-P3100DVD DVD Headunit. All I can say is damn! This is my first real review on here, so bear with me!
Looks and Integration:
This unit looks awesome. I was a little worried about the glossy finish, but it actually really adds to it. It looks awesome and definitely catches your eye.
I didn't get the OnStar or Bose integration packages, but I'll go into why a little later...
Score: 10 out of 10
Sound:
When I went to talk to my stereo guy about this new unit, he mentioned that I would eventually want to upgrade the speakers at least in the front, and I ended up doing that. I replaced them with a set of Memphis Audio 15-PR62 (or 15-PR620, I don't have the box on me right now...). They make me wonder how I made it with the Bose stuff before.
I had put in a Memphis 15" M1 Sub a few months back and it sounds like a completely different sub. The level control is a must!
If you're wanting to use the stock Speakers, they can make it work without using the stock Bose amp. My rear speakers are still the stock ones, and they sound a lot better anyways.
Score: 10 out of 10
Controls:
I wanted something that would let me be in complete control of my music and this does much more than just that. I was originally afraid of not having a rotary commander but honestly after using this unit, I like not having it. I have another Pioneer radio that has that rotary commander and it almost gets in the way, and was really a nice twist. The other hard buttons are very responsive but lag on rare occasion, definitely nothing to complain about.
The touchscreen is really, really responsive, maybe even more than my iPhone. And the speed of the unit overall is extremely fast. Pictured below is the source menu, which does exactly as it says, helps you pick a source.
iPod connectivity is flawless, but it does slow down a little bit when I use the iPhone vs the iPod Nano. They really did an awesome job on it! The UI is really polished, and it looks like they knew what they were doing on this one. The Pioneer logo even comes up on the screen on my Nano.
The remote, which I thought I would never use, is actually really nice to have and I use it all the time. The only problem is that you can't control the iPod with it. (-1) Sometimes it lags, but it's workable. EDIT: You can switch songs with the remote and fast forward, but not select songs from your playlists or via artist, song, etc.
Score: 8 out of 10
Customization:
I love the customization of this unit. You can change to basically any color you can think of for the backlighting, menus, and lettering. It's pretty cool.
Overall Score: 9.5 out of 10
Overall, this unit has a few tiny things wrong with it, but it's definately more than a solid HU. You can't beat it for the price! I paid $750 for the unit, install, XM tuner, iPod cable, and remote. I think I did pretty good on this one!
If you have any questions, comments, or just wanna say hey, hit me up!
