Plasti Dipped GMC - Take #1 & #2

I say Take #1 because this is not exactly "pretty" compared to some other black on chrome emblems I've seen, but hey, it was my first use of Plasti Dip.

The Job:

Tape on:

Done: (sorry for slight blur, slow shutter due to lighting, will take a pic in the day if it doesn't look even more rough)

All in all, I will be redoing it when I get a chance. Perhaps tomorrow evening. One issue, seen on the M and C, I only sweeped the can horizontally. Although all the guides I read said this was ideal, I realized when I redid the G (oh yeah, it ripped so I did it after the M and C were done) that going vertical for the last layer made a huge difference. I think the issue was that I was letting the coats dry too long, resulting in them sticking to the tape and not peeling easily enough. Guides said 15-30 and the can said 30 minutes between coats, so I did 20, but I think I could've managed 10 if not 5 minutes. My process was 1st coat, 20 minutes, 2nd coat, 20 minutes, 3rd coat, tape off. Next time I'll try 5-10 minute intervals instead, with vertical motion included.

I guess I'm posting this to give others an idea of what can go wrong :D Good thing its cheap and simple. If anyone has any suggestions for the next time, please feel free to post 'em. I do have one question.. is there a specific way to remove the tape to allow for better peel (pulling a certain direction) or should it not matter because the plasti dip shouldn't be completely dry?

Thanks guys!

Edit For Take Two:
See post #18 for more info and more pics.

Do lighter coats and take the tape off while still wet.

as for pulling the tape the best way to do it is take a razor blade and cut the line ( I did my whole truck )

and as for a tip Use VERY light coats and allow for ample time to dry. Looking at your pics I think you need to hold the can a little bit farther away as well to prevent the runs.
This may require you to tape more off

Yates: Agreed, that's on the board for next time.

Donnie: The razor blade is a good idea. I was considering it, but wasn't smart enough to go at it. I will for sure get the box cutter out for that one. Also, yes, my very first coat I had the can at about 8" like a normal spray. Quickly realized Plasti Dip didn't work like that! Back up to 12-15", but still tended to go in closer in habit. And lighter coats, makes sense. I just want it to be durable. Honestly its the tape that is a pain in the rear to do, moreso than the spray.

I have ALOT of things dipped on my truck and I do 5-6 light coats and have had no problems with the dip for the 1+ year I've had the things dipped.

Just to get a mark on what "light coat" indicates... Starting from scratch, would a light coat be the moment that no red is visible at all? Then just repeat every 5-10 minutes for 3-5 times?

no... light mean you can barely see the black from the dip on the red (25% dip, 75% red)... then another light coat should be 50% black from the dip and 50% red emblem. Then next would be 75% black with just a hint of red showing 25%. Then last coat all black, no red
