Well i was thinking, if i go this route, run it into the battery and use the interior dome light as a signal wire. Still be able to bypass the steps by switching dome lights off. It will open no matter the door position, but downside, it would also come down when you unlock your doors

Default
Isn't there some sort of sensor in the door that lets the truck know to turn the dome lights on? And when you get out, it shuts the radio off once you push your door past a certain point. Whatever controls that would be your best bet, but I don't know what that would be. I would tap the wire that deangrell is talking about because it's probably the one I'm talking about. Your steps will probably get annoying if you tap them into the dome lights.

I may be wrong but I believe the doors, hood, and rear hatch incorporate a proximity sensor to activate the circuits. This is going to send a signal to the computer or possibly a relay system. I believe it is the computer and as such it would prove worthless unless you also add a "latching relay" to control the running boards from the signal sent.

A Haynes manual should give you the schematics of the circuit and answer your question.
