Just got done doing valve cover gaskets. Had to remove a bunch of stuff, including the power steering pulley to get bracket moved out the way. My question is how do I get the pulley back on? I used a power steering pulley puller to get it off but the shaft is not threaded so I am lost. Am I supposed to bang this thing back on or what? Thanks!

You run the risk of damaging the pump if you bang it on, I have gotten away doing this a couple times out in the "field" but I also have messed some up. I am sure there is a specialty tool to install it properly, check out your local AutoZ or Oreily's I'm sure they got a loaner setup to gitter done.

Thanks for the reply. Im pretty sure now that it is supposed to be threaded and has just rusted the threads away. Guess Im going to have to change over the pump...

There is a special tool to pull it back on. Don't try to hammer it on cause you won't be able to. It takes a lot of force to get the pulley installed.

DO NOT HAMMER IT ON, risk bending the shaft.

Advanced Auto has the correct puller doubles up as an installer.

Thanks for the replies, I guess my sarcasm does not translate as well over the computer. I have a puller/installer kit for power steering pulleys. I just wasn't sure if it was some new type of shaft without threads...This Yukon is the newest thing I own so I'm learning very quickly why I like old vehicles. Simple valve cover job turned into a day of complete ********...again thanks for the concern, I wasn't really going to try and smash the pulley onto the shaft :)

Do you know how to bleed power steering? After install I filled it to in between hot/cold markers then proceeded to turn wheel to the left, then to the right. It was my understanding that this is the correct way but I did like 20 times and its still whining, still turning hard and throwing air up through the fluid. Is there an easier way to do this? Is there something else I am forgetting to do procedure wise? It was kind of a pain in the ass so Im hoping this pump is ok...

Make sure the fluid level has not dropped. If you are getting aerated fluid you might want to check the return hoses for having loose clamps
