Im thinking of trading in my 2019 expedition max on a tahoe and i wanted to ask first, are they pretty reliable? The expedition is a nightmare, Struts leaking, Cam phasors need replaced, etc. I understand it the first model year, but our expedition started having issues in the first couple 1000 miles.
Upside is it seems to be worth quite a bit a money in this market. Almost what i paid which is nuts. So that leads to my next question, if i order a tahoe, is there any negotiation below sticker or at least just paying sticker price? Im not paying above sticker, that just puts me way upside down on the car if/when things get back to normal. Im in no hurry, can wait as long as it takes to get it. What have your experiences been when ordering?
thx

Yes the the 2021's are reliable. I would FIND ONE ON THE LOT READY TO TRADE IN THOUGH.....
Normally, i would agree, ive never ordered a car. However, im hearing that if there is a car on the lot, they are charging way over sticker because there are so many people trying to buy it.

I recently went through this myself - have had a ‘09 suburban, ‘13 yukon Denali, ‘15 expedition EL (one of the last years with the 5.4 I think), ‘18 yukon XL SLT, now ‘21 Yukon XL Denali (About 1 week old).

I did not order, instead I chose to just roll the dice and hoped to get one that came on the lot. I’m actually not that picky and I figured any well equipped Denali would do. The dealer I work with tends to order a lot of white tricoat or black denali’s and either of those are good for me.

I went to the dealer a few months ago and let them know I’d be interested in turning in my lease (or more precisely, buying the truck, then selling it to them) and looking for a new XL. Asked them to ballpark what they’d give me for the ‘18. I began getting phone calls from them each time a delivery was coming in. This past week, they had 2 XL denali‘s and 1 XL SLT coming in. All were sold before they arrived (one of the denali’s to me). They had 7 people lined up ready to buy them, and only 3 trucks came in.

From a reliability perspective, we are at the very tail end of the ‘21 build cycle, so I’m hoping most of the bugs will be worked out. Ultimately time will tell. If it‘s a problem, I’ll be trading in again down the road.

I would not expect to be able to negotiate below MSRP. It was like pulling teeth to get the dealer to allow me to use GM Employee pricing, which I can get from a close family member (and I’ve bought 5 cars from this dealer in the past 12 years). Overall though, even at MSRP it is a decent deal, since you will be getting a higher value for the trade-in vehicle.

For example, I had about $10k in extra equity in my lease buyout than expected (lease buyout was $36k, I got $45k from dealer). That was on a ‘18 SLT with 58k miles (as a side note, I should have been at 45k miles at turn-in, so I also avoided that $3,250 over mileage charge). We are in a very strange time as it relates to new vs. used car values, I chose to take advantage of it the best I could.

Man, I need to know which dealer you use. None of mine are getting any in.

Some folks in the past week or so bought a new truck and didn't pay over sticker. It really depends on the market and the dealership. Be willing to travel too. More than a few people fly to Laura GMC and drive their new truck home. Consider the GMC Yukon as well.

I have contacted tons of dealers and some have been great and others well not so much. I ended up sticking with my local and they are honoring both GMS and GM employee pricing. I know for sure they aren’t charging over MSRP.

Sell yours now while the market is up. Then you are free to negotiate a purchase anywhere, anytime with no complications.

I've called them a few times. I had one salesman I'd been talking to and once I asked about supplier codes he stopped responding.
