I am a little hesitant on swapping out the gears on my 05 myself. I want to go 4.10 from 3.73. I got a quote from a reputable driveline shop. He said $500 out the door and he keeps old gear set or $600 and I keep the gear set. It would be done in a day. What do you guys think?

I haven`t had a gear change done in a very long time so i can`t really comment on the price but i`m wondering why he wants to keep your old gears? Does he sell them to people and tell them they`re getting a new set? Every time i had new gears installed they throw the old gears in the box that the new ones came in and throw it in the trunk.

You got a point. I guess I could ask him for box of replacement gears. This guy does have a shop full of his own personal cars & projects. He is an old racer, and probably a bit of a hoarder. There is still a chance I do it myself, I just have to find some good videos & make sure I have the right tools.

Price at a good shop by me is about $300 labor plus whatever parts you choose. I still did my 07 myself.

Paid about $1,000.00 back in 2004 to have my new Silverado's whole pumpkin changed from 3:42 to 4:10. Kept the original pumpkin. That was in OKC. Excellent job as there was no whine, clunk, or any other noise/action from the rear end. Just as good as stock. Guess you get what you pay for?

2WD I assume?

Sounds like you upgraded the carrier, which would make the price about right (Probably what you are calling the pumpkin). The GM G-80 locker has a sketchy reputation if you had that.

I spent about 700 for bearings and an eaton traclok carrier for my 07, and I reused my original gears that had 190k miles on them.

The pumpkin was the whole gear set without the axles. Just opened it up, removed the rear U-joint, pulled the axles and slid it out. Then put a whole new set of everything in, shimmed it for load, lash, etc., slid in the axles, and hooked up the U-joint, added lubricant and away you go.

I had a 1964 Impala with the 300 horse 327 and four on the floor. I used to carry a whole junk yard punpkin in the trunk 'cause I was always blowing the rearend drag racing anyone and everyone who wanted to. Blew through six of them, not counting the original. Only option I had on the Impala was a radio. No A/C, no power brakes/windows or anything else. Bench seats front and back 2dht. It ran pretty good back then.
