SO remember i told yall that their was a leak going on in my right rear tire and at first i thought it was the shocks and then i thought it was breaks. Well apparently is not the breaks.. So it has some kinda burning smell coming from that tire and the drum gets supper hot. Could it be the axle that is leaking fluid through the gasket where the drum is or what do yall think it might be?

Your are talking the axle shaft seal. I recall you saying the build up was not around that area. At any rate if it is leaking there and you did nut over extend your drum adjustment, your lining are contaminated and have to be tossed. Get a few visual pictures up at different angle with thew drum off. including the bottoms of linings I could probably tell you if it is gear or brake fluid.

And i asked my neighbor since he is a mechanic and one thing he did see was that the seal was out its position so we too the whole drum and the plate that holds the pads and springs and he told me to just tap it back in place.. So i did but i notice today the same smell as burnt rubber or oil so i decided to touch the drum and it was smoking hot.. I know thats not normal cause i went around to the other one and it was just fine. I will try to get some pics up and see what we can do cause i really dont want to pay someone to take care of the problem... Now if the gears are it, what do you suggest of me doing? also, what lining is contaminated which i would have to toss if it is that? Just to let you know, when i did the tranny work about 3 weeks ago, i asked them to open that axle cause the seal where that ball is on that axle was slowly starting to leak. So i asked them to open the thing up and see if it was good and to put the seal back on and take care of that. And what i did notice was that the cover to that ball had been painted or something cause it looks supper black as if something got melted on the cover... and ever since i got the truck back, its when i notice that leak... Could it be that they left something wrong in there?

axle seals is my guess. No where else has fluid back there that can get burnt.

Remove you rear axle shafts and replace both axle end seals and reinstall shaft. if it got on the drum it is extremely likely you brake shoes friction material(lining) have been contaminated by now and will have to be replaced. You always replace both sides at the same time. Do both axle seals because once you undo the pin inside the differential you can bump both axles inward a little bit remove the c-clips and pull the axle out. replace seal and axle goes back in when finished put new gasket on differential cover, re-install and fill with axle fluid(maybe old anyway) no point in going thru all that twice. if the other axle tube seal leaked later.

Post a picture of this "ball" you are refering to. I have not seen that referenced in the manual on axle.:) Your are talking about the rear axle still correct?

Yes sir.. im still talking about the rear axle where the gears are at.. now if i do this, u want me to replace the whole axle with new seals and new shoes and pads on both sides? also something better yall would recommend to go with on the axle performance wise since i will have to change it?

Would i just have to change the axles right? i dont need to switch out the whole difirential bar correct?

If you decide to fix both axle seals or not, check the diff vent to see if it is working.
You may be building up pressure and forcing oil out or pushing the seal out.

I had that happen, the drivers rear seal leaked BAD ... I replaced them, put on a new cover and called it a day. I cleaned off the brakes as best I could, I'll look at a read disc swap as my next big project ...

Was it causing your the drum to heat up? and also, how hard was it to do or did you have someone do it for u? And was your leak just around the rim and splattered around the top of the tire?
