just a quick question 2001 Chevy tahoe LT 5.3 i know the transmission fluid is temp sensetive. I drove about a 2 miles and let it warm for about a minute or 2 then I checked the fluid and it was on the cold mark should it of been on the hot mark?

I wouldn't take my word as gospel or even correct; but there is a LOT of ATF in these things (at least compared to what I'm ised to working on), especially if you have a trans cooler. It may take longer than 2 minutes to warm all that up - if it were me, just to be sure I wasn't overfilling it, I'd drive it for 15 or 20 minutes at highway speed to verify it was at it's usual operating temp, as long as it's not acting like it's way low on fluid or shifting weird and possibly doing damage.

I'm still doing an awful lot of learning about these vehicles though - that may be unnecessary.

as long as it isn't low and not leaking anywhere I wouldn't trip on it, go about your day the next couple times you have been driving around for a bit and stop to fuel up leave the engine running and check it on a level surface. if it looks little low add a little. if not keep on truckin!

Nope, it was probably still under normal operating temperature. Drive it for 30 minutes and then check it. You can check on the cold side but hot side is more accurate.

Here's my routine fwiw...

Drive it for a minimum of 15 minutes with varied styles /speeds.

Pull into the driveway.

Shift from P-D-R-N-3-2-1 and back up to P, stopping for 5 secs in each gear up and down.

Pop the hood, get out, and immediately check the stick, looking for hot level.

Trans fluid takes longer than a few minutes to heat up. You'll want to check it after driving 15+ miles.

From the manual:

tl;dr, check trans between 180 and 200f. (trans temp not coolant temp) Park it, run through the gears, let idle for 3 minutes, then check fluid in park w/ engine running
