just a quick question 2001 Chevy tahoe LT 5.3 i know the transmission fluid is temp sensetive. I drove about a 2 miles and let it warm for about a minute or 2 then I checked the fluid and it was on the cold mark should it of been on the hot mark?
if there is any bubbles it's low it will give a FALSE normal level reading..
this happened on my old car it had a false reading because of air bubbles and i busted the transmission. it was on it's way out anyways it was set to fail an emissions test anyways..

I'm not buying that 180 to 200F is normal operating temp
I never seen above 160f

according to the owners manual there is nothing specified not even the fluid that should be used

157F is the HIGHEST i have seen so far even when it's 85F outside
(i live in the desert it gets to 110F out here in the summer)...

it doesn't have to be 180deg, just whatever the normal operating temp is, mine no longer hits 180 it might hit 165 after installing extra cooling, I would imagine transmission temps will vary some on different vehicles depending on elevation, swb, lwb, 2wd, 4wd, awd, and driving style.

Another thing to note is that it’s ok to run a quart over full. The place where I bought my very expensive Level 3 4l60 (Performabuilt) even illustrated that some dipsticks on the 60’s are off. It’s not like an engine where if it’s too full, damage can occur. The worst that can happen if your trans is too full is it will leak the extra out of the vent tube at the top. But if it’s too low, that’s when damage can occur. Performabuilt states 1/2” over on the dipstick is fine but 1/2” below can cause damage.

I remember a conversation about this, too. I try to keep it at or just above the line.

Yep, that's some good info to store in the archives of your mind.
